DREDGING IS COMPLETE, BEACH IS BACK

Crews aboard the E.W. Ellefsen cutterhead dredge began the beach renourishment project in late April, and the project has been completed. Crews moved over 775,000 cubic yards of sand from the south end of the island, new Masonboro Inlet, to a stretch of Wrightsville Beach coastline from the Blockade Runner to the Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort, north of Johnnie Mercer’s Pier.

The project cost approximately $9 million, according to Bob Keistler, a project manager for the Army Corps of Engineers, and will be needed again in four years.
